Timing Belts

In a vehicle, the timing belt or chain connects the crankshaft to the camshaft which controls the opening and closing of the engines valves. The valves need to open and close with every revolution and the timing belt controls this critical operation. Ultimately the timing belt keeps your vehicles upper end in sync with the lower end of your vehicles engine. It is also common that the timing belt may drive other engine components such as the water and or oil pump.

Timing Belt Replacement:

Timing Belt Replacement should be looked at as a preventative maintenance repair.  Most manufacturers recommend replacing the timing belt at 60k-100k miles.  While some preventative maintenance services can be put off past manufacturers recommendation without serious recourse, timing belt replacement is not on of them.

Timing Belt Failure:

Waiting past your vehicles manufacture recommended timing belt replacement risks expensive and catastrophic engine failure. The timing belt controls the timing(hence the name) of the valves and pistons opening and closing.  When the timing belt fails it causes the pistons and valves to get out of sync and collide causing serious engine damage, in some cases the entire engine will need to be replaced.
